NEW YORK—June 8, 2010 – E-J Electric Installation Co. (E-J) is pleased to announce that the company recently completed the JetBlue Terminal 5 project at JFK International Airport. The historic terminal project included a new $746 million, 635,000 square foot, 26-gate passenger terminal at New York’s JFK Airport located behind the 1962 historic landmark Eero Saarinen-designed TWA Terminal.
E-J installed three separate “5-pack” line-ups of 5kv S&C switchgear and metering. Each concourse included a separate collector bus and 5000-amp 480v service. Emergency power distribution included (2) 1000 kw and (1) 750 kw generator sets with 14 ATS switches including the underground power distribution and telephone duct bank. E-J’s work included all 277/480v power and lighting, transformers and 120/208v panel distribution, including a six air terminal “ESE” lightning protection and grounding systems. Throughout the new terminal facility, E-J installed the A/V and miscellaneous electrical equipment package that included all flight, baggage, information and television displays. Also put in place were 200 LCD monitors with custom mounting applications, e-ticket kiosks, baggage scales, check-in and gate counter ticketing computer equipment, video conference rooms and JetBlue’s employee time management equipment.
E-J also provided the electrical installation of the 15,000-feet conveyor baggage handling system with integrated security systems and control panels, along with all conduit, wiring and control devices, as well as the installation of all related devices such as photo eyes, start-stop stations and motors. In addition, E-J provided the terminal-wide fire alarm system with interfacing between BMS, baggage handling, mechanical, security and public address systems. This included the installation of the 55,000 square foot concessions.
Project challenges included tight coordination of the construction schedule and installation of sophisticated technical equipment and systems. E-J Communications Systems provided and installed a 5-channel UHF Trunking system and six VHF-AM radios and antenna systems to fully support air-ground flight operations and a state-of-the-art integrated radio and dispatch system. Fiber optic and communication installations for the Port Authority included the JetBlue “Yellow vault” at the Yellow parking garage. This project also included the installation of a UPS system, ventilation system, with more than 5000 strands of single-mode fiber optic cabling, over 1000 fusion splices and Cat5e backbone cabling. This provided connectivity between the Port Authority and JetBlue’s Terminal 5 and JFK’s Terminals 4, 6 and 7. According to Anthony Mann, President of E-J, “We were proud to be part of the JetBlue team and to provide electrical construction work for such a landmark airport project. Our work included a wide range of electrical services, including low voltage, data, fire safety and supplemental power from three generators, and we were pleased to be able to respond to the challenge and to be part of such an exciting, complex construction assignment.”
